There’s a common misconception that Pilates is only for women. Did you know that it was actually created by a man…for men!

That’s right! Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates. As a German man living in England at the start of World War I, Joseph was sent to an internment camp in England along with other captured German citizens.

Due to poor conditions and limited activity, some of his fellow Germans became so weak, they were unable to get out of bed. Being a fitness enthusiast, Joseph led daily exercise routines for his entire cell block. Later, he was charged with taking care of those with disease and injury so he developed exercises for patients with limited mobility. This lead to him using the hospital beds and bed springs as a makeshift piece of fitness equipment. Today, the equipment has evolved into what we all know as the “Pilates Reformer”.

After the war, Joseph moved back to Germany where he worked briefly for the Hamburg military police in self-defense and physical training. In 1925 he was asked to train the German army. Instead, he left Germany to move to the United States. On the boat ride over, he met Clara, a nurse, who would later become his wife.

Together, he and Clara opened a fitness studio in New York City. It specialized in what they called Contrology which later became known as Pilates. This new method was an instant hit, particularly among dancers such as Martha Graham and George Balanchine. They found the Pilates method the best way to both recover from injuries and to prevent their recurrence. Gradually, it spread to wider audiences and by the mid 2000's had exploded into the mainstream.

Here at the Pilates Haus we teach contemporary Pilates on the reformer and half cadillac.

We combine the fundamentals of Pilates and modern-style techniques for a full body workout that burns calories, builds strength and creates results.

We’re here to help create a healthy fitness lifestyle that goes beyond the studio.

While group reformer classes is the main thing we offer, we can deliver privates at off class hours.

Our goal is to educate our clients so they know how to get the best workout possible in every class and be able to come multiple times a week in order to see results. If you need a little more one on one attention in order to familiarize your body with the exercises and machine, text or call the studio at 727-592-8963 or email at info@thepilateshaus.com to discuss prices and times for private Pilates sessions.

We ask all new students to please arrive 10-15 minutes early to their first class.

We ask all students to wear grip socks, which are also available for purchase at the studio.

Additionally, we kindly ask that you leave your cell phone in a cubby on silent mode.

As a courtesy to others, classes must be cancelled 12 hours in advance. This can be done in the MindBody scheduling system. By doing this, you allow others your spot in the class.

If you cancel with less than 12 hours until class time or no show, you will lose the class. Those with a monthly day-pass membership will be charged a $10 Late Cancellation/No Show Fee to their card on file.

While we prefer you be on time for class, we understand things can happen which may make you a little late and we don't want you to miss out on your workout. If you arrive to a class that has already started, quietly make your way to an available reformer and first do your footwork to warm up before joining the rest of the class on the exercise they are currently on. This is done to avoid injury caused by not warming up prior to harder exercises.

**If this is your first class and you haven't been introduced to footwork yet, it is very important that you arrive 10-15 mins before class.

Scheduling classes can be done on our website or our app using MindBody's scheduling system. Log into your account and click book on the class you would like to schedule.

**You must have a package of classes or an active monthly membership in order to book. If it's your first time and you'd like to take advantage of the free class option, "purchase" the free class for $0 in our online store prior to booking a class in the schedule.

If a class is full and you choose to join the waitlist, you are selecting to attend the class if a spot should become available. If someone cancels and a spot opens up 12 hours or more before the class, you will be AUTOMATICALLY added into the class from the waitlist. You will get notified via email and/or text, whichever option you have selected in your account (please let us know if you need help setting this up).

If you get added into the class from the waitlist and need to cancel, you can do so in the scheduling system 12 hours prior to class so you don't get charged the late cancel fee.

If you are on the waitlist and someone late cancels after the 12 hour cancellation window, you will NOT be automatically added into the class but instead a spot will now show available. This is to ensure the person from the waitlist doesn't get added with too short notice and get charged a fee for not showing. Due to this, we highly recommend checking the schedule after the 12 hour cancellation period to see if a spot has opened up in a class that had previously been full or waitlisted.

Whenever you are on a waitlist, please check your texts and/ or emails regularly and prior to going to bed so you know if you made it into the class.

There are a few parking spots in front of the studio that can be seen when driving down Missouri. If those are full, there is a large parking lot behind the studio which can be accessed by turning onto Gould St. from Missouri and then into the parking lot. If by the off chance this parking lot is also full, there are covered spots across Gould St., next to the laundry mat, that can also be used for The Pilates Haus parking.

While there is a backdoor you can enter to get into the studio, we prefer you use the sidewalk and walk around to the front of the building to enter the studio that way. This will bring you in where the front desk is and will be less likely to disrupt a class that's going on.

Are you loving your monthly membership but you'll be out of town or just really busy for a few weeks and not able to come to class? Email us at info@thepilateshaus.com and we'll put your membership on freeze so you won't get charged again until you're ready to come back. Once you're back, email us again and we'll un-pause your membership so you can resume classes.

Unlike many gyms, we make it easy to cancel because we believe in the saying, if you love someone, let them go...that way you can easily and happily return to us when you're ready! We only ask that you give us 7 days notice prior to your next charge date so we can cancel your membership in the system.

That said, if you're cancelling because you're unhappy, we'd love for you to call, text or email us so we can try to make it right! Here at The Pilates Haus we believe in community and good customer service!

If you're in your first or second trimester and you have clearance from your doctor to do Pilates, you can still attend the beginner or intermediate full body classes. Make sure your instructor is aware so they can help you modify any exercises needed.

If you're new to Pilates, we recommend you take privates instead of group classes so they can be more modified to your needs.
